What Calligraphy Performance Means to Ryujin

My calligraphy performance is influenced by decades of fascination with ROCK music, characterized by powerful and intense expressions unbound by conventional notions.

The moment I pick up the brush, my heart deeply resonates with nature, giving birth to soul-stirring expressions.

In my university days, I headed to the snowy mountains, and now, if there are waves, I go surfing.
My life has been one of being played with by nature.

Especially the “Ki” (energy) of nature felt through snowboarding and surfing is the wellspring of my creation.

Calligraphy performance, snowboarding, surfing──
At first glance, they seem unrelated, but they are deeply connected by the awareness of the “axis” and “Tanden” (body’s core).

This sensation gives rise to unwavering and powerful expressions.

The sight of Enoshima and the sacred Mount Fuji from the Shonan sea is breathtakingly beautiful.
My calligraphy performance is about imprinting that beautiful scenery in my heart and expressing it through the brush.

Brushstrokes that shake the soul, imbued with the spirit of Bushido.
The calligraphy style is powerful and intense, evoking a samurai’s soul.

Behind this lies the discipline of Iai-do.
Since September 2021, I have been continuously training twice a week in Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū.
Mental focus and the body’s central axis flow into the brush.

A dedicatory Iai performance is also possible before the calligraphy performance (no additional charge).

A flash from silence heightens the atmosphere and is perfect for starting the performance.
The fusion of martial arts spirit and reverence for nature creates a unique style, that is “Ryujin’s Calligraphy Performance”.

Domestic: Collaborations with Mayor Kenichi Yoshizumi of Shinjuku Ward and Mayor Ken Hasebe of Shibuya Ward, Shibuya CAST, Japan’s largest fashion event, VIP party for a major entertainment agency at Hotel Okura, wedding receptions, and many others.
Overseas: Italy (Milan, University of Rome), Paris Japan Expo, Azerbaijan, Dubai (Consulate-General, Kinokuniya, Seven-Eleven Dubai Grand Opening Reception), Abu Dhabi, educational events, etc.

【Colorful Calligraphy Live in Shibuya】

We can propose completely new expressions tailored to the event’s purpose and the space’s atmosphere.

For example, this was a colorful calligraphy performance themed around the city of Shibuya.
We pursued vivid and dynamic expressions suitable for this city where diverse and free cultures intersect.

Chosen Kanji “交” (Kō): A character symbolizing Shibuya’s iconic scramble crossing.
Selected by public vote, followed by a calligraphy performance.

Free and Colorful Production: Dynamic brushwork performed to the accompaniment of Satsuma Biwa, followed by scattering colorful sand onto the characters, and a final flourish where the colored sand drifts down.

The movement of the colored sand appealed visually and vibrantly colored the venue.

Collaboration with Biwa: Calligraphy performed alongside a live performance by Satsuma Biwa player, Mr. Yasushi Maruyama.
This collaboration with traditional Japanese instruments enhanced the power of the calligraphy and deeply captivated the audience.
